A GIS Approach to Identifying Barriers to Active Transportation in Acadia

This project was created for use by Sustainable Calgary, as part of the course GEOG 457: Urban and Environmental GIS, taught by Dr. Victoria Fast, in the Department of Geography at the University of Calgary.

Project Goals:

  • Use a GIS-based approach to identify locations within Acadia, and in surrounding areas, tha t discourage walking and cycling as a means of t ransportation.

  • Compare the locations from our analysis to locations identified by residents during earlier consultations with Sustainable Calgary.

  • Identify friction points in and around the neighbourhood to assist professionals with proposing solutions for the space that will help more people leave their cars behind.
