Plan calls for redevelopment of abandoned rail line to help bridge the Deerfoot divide
A new report outlines a vision for reusing an abandoned rail line that goes under Deerfoot Trail in northeast Calgary.
The former Canadian Pacific Railway spur line runs from the Nose Creek valley, near Telus Spark, through a tunnel under the expressway and into the Franklin industrial area.
Celia Lee with Sustainable Calgary, one of the groups behind the report, says turning the six-kilometre line into a pathway for cyclists and people on foot could help bridge what's known as the Deerfoot divide — a sort of wall put up by the six-lane freeway.
The report says the repurposing of the line could bring numerous benefits to the area and help spur redevelopment of vibrant new public spaces, promoting a live-work-shop atmosphere with increased population density.
